The pages of history hold some mysteries that continue to baffle scientists and researchers today. The biggest and most famous of these is Atlantis. Was it truly an advanced civilization that vanished into the sea overnight, or was it merely the pure imagination of a philosopher?
The Origins of Atlantis: Plato’s Idea
The first mention of Atlantis was made approximately 2400 years ago by the great Greek philosopher Plato in his two books, ‘Timaeus’ and ‘Critias’. According to Plato, Atlantis was a vast and powerful island located near the “Pillars of Hercules” (today’s Strait of Gibraltar).
Plato described it as a “utopian society,” where the people were incredibly wealthy, intelligent, and technologically advanced. However, the main purpose of Plato’s story was not to praise Atlantis, but to show that when a civilization becomes greedy and arrogant, its destruction is inevitable. Most historians believe that Plato used Atlantis merely as a parable.
19th-Century Science and the Rebirth of Atlantis
For hundreds of years, Atlantis was considered nothing more than a story. But in the late 1800s, when science and archaeology were rapidly advancing, people began to take this story seriously.
At that time, scientists faced some unresolved questions:
• Similar Architecture: Pyramids were found in both Egypt and the Americas (Mayan Civilization), despite the thousands of miles of the Atlantic Ocean separating them. People wondered if there was a connection between them?
• Similar Fossils: The discovery of similar animal remains on different continents also puzzled researchers.
The “pseudo-scientists” of that time offered a single answer to these questions—Atlantis. They believed that Atlantis was a “land bridge” or a connecting link from which knowledge and culture spread to both ends of the world.
William Scott-Elliot’s Mysterious Maps
The most significant turning point in the history of Atlantis came when a man named William Scott-Elliot published four detailed maps. These maps remain a source of mystery on the internet even today.
Scott-Elliot claimed that he had not obtained these maps through any excavation, but through his “clairvoyance.” Some of the main points he described about Atlantis were:
• Antiquity: According to him, Atlantis was at its peak 1 million years ago.
• Technology: The people there possessed flying machines powered by some kind of etheric energy.
• City Planning: The main city was circular with a large reservoir in the center.
The End of Atlantis: A Four-Stage Destruction
Scott-Elliot’s maps show how Atlantis gradually sank into the sea over millions of years.
• First Stage: It was a vast continent covering a large part of what is now the Atlantic Ocean.
• Second Stage: Around 800,000 years ago, a major earthquake broke it into pieces.
• Final Stage: Around 9564 BC, a massive flood occurred, submerging the last remaining part of Atlantis. Interestingly, this time matches the time mentioned by Plato.
Atlantis and the Danger of Pseudo-Science
Although the story of Atlantis sounds very exciting, it also has a dark side. Some thinkers in the 19th and 20th centuries used Atlantis to promote racial superiority (racism).
They argued that the people of Atlantis were the true ‘Aryans’ and that all the world’s great civilizations originated from them. Even during Nazi Germany, Adolf Hitler and his associate Heinrich Himmler sent several expeditions to search for Atlantis in order to prove the superiority of the German race. This is evidence of how misinformation can be used for dangerous purposes.
Did Atlantis really exist?
Modern science and geology now have the theory of plate tectonics, which explains how continents move. Today’s seafloor maps are so accurate that we can confidently say that there was never a lost continent in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.
Current scientific findings regarding the existence of Atlantis:
• Archaeological evidence: To date, no physical remains have been found anywhere in the world that confirm an advanced civilization dating back a million years.
• Ocean mapping: Modern satellite imagery of the ocean floor has not revealed any evidence of a submerged city.
