Bermuda Triangle: The mystery of death

There’s a place on the world map that sends shivers down your spine just hearing about it. A region where the laws of physics seem to fail, where compasses go haywire, and from where those who venture never return. We’re talking about the Bermuda Triangle. It’s also known as the “Triangle of Death” or the “Devil’s Triangle.” For decades, it has been presented as an unsolved mystery in books, films, and on the internet. But is it still a mystery in the modern age? Let’s delve deeper into this article and uncover the truth.

Geography of the Bermuda Triangle

The Bermuda Triangle is not an official name that can be found on a map. It is a hypothetical region in the North Atlantic Ocean. Its three main points are:

Miami, Florida (USA)

Bermuda Islands

Puerto Rico (San Juan)

The triangle formed by connecting these three points is called the Bermuda Triangle. This region spans approximately 500,000 to 1,500,000 square miles. It is a part of the ocean through which some of the world’s busiest maritime and air traffic passes.

The Historical Event That Terrified Everyone: Flight 19

While stories of the Bermuda Triangle date back a long time, it gained global recognition on December 5, 1945.

At 2:10 PM, five US Navy torpedo bomber aircraft (TBM Avenger) took off from Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The mission was called ‘Flight 19’. It was a routine training mission. The weather was clear, and the aircraft were in good condition.  But about two hours after takeoff, the mission leader, Lieutenant Charles Taylor, sent a strange message over the radio.

He said, “Both my compasses are malfunctioning. I don’t know where I am. I can see the ground below, but everything looks strange.”  As evening fell, the weather worsened, and contact with the five aircraft was lost permanently.  These five planes carried 14 crew members. That same night, a Mariner rescue aircraft with 13 people on board was sent to search for them. But, surprisingly, that rescue plane also disappeared. In a single day, six aircraft and 27 people vanished without a trace. This is where the legend of the Bermuda Triangle began.

The Story of Ellen Austin and the Ghost Ship

A famous incident from 1881 is part of the history of the Bermuda Triangle. A large ship named Ellen Austin was sailing to New York.  En route, they encountered an unidentified ship. Everything on the ship was intact, the cargo was in place, but there was not a single person on board.

The captain of the Ellen Austin sent some of his crew members to the derelict ship so they could tow it. But suddenly a storm arose, and the two ships separated. When the storm subsided, the captain saw that the ship was once again adrift, and the men he had sent to it had also disappeared. This story fueled the fear that there is some force here that “swallows” people.

The Science Behind the Mystery: What Do Experts Say?

Scientists have proposed several theories to solve the mystery of the Bermuda Triangle. The most prominent among them are the following:

1. Magnetic Declination

The Earth has a “geographic north” (true north) and a “magnetic north.”  Generally, a compass does not point to true north.  However, the Bermuda Triangle is one of the few places where both of these north directions align. This is called the ‘agonic line’.  Pilots and sailors of the past didn’t understand this phenomenon and would get lost, drifting into the open ocean.

2. Methane Gas Deposits (Methane Hydrates)

There are ‘mud volcanoes’ on the ocean floor that contain large amounts of methane gas. When this gas suddenly erupts, the density of the water decreases. If a ship is present at that time, it sinks into the water as if a stone were dropped in the air. This happens so quickly that the ship’s captain doesn’t even have time to send a ‘Mayday’ signal.

3. Hexagonal Clouds and ‘Air Bombs’

Satellite images have revealed that hexagonal clouds form in the sky above this area. These clouds can be 20 to 50 miles wide. Meteorologists believe that these clouds act like ‘air bombs’. The wind speed here can reach up to 170 miles per hour, which can easily force any aircraft into the sea.

4. Gulf Stream

This is like a fast-flowing river within the ocean. If a plane or ship crashes into the water, the Gulf Stream carries it away so quickly that rescue teams never find the wreckage at the same location where the accident occurred.

When we hear about a particular topic (like the Bermuda Triangle), our minds tend to notice only events related to that topic.

The truth is that just as many ships and planes disappear in other oceans of the world. But because the Bermuda Triangle is famous, people exaggerate every minor incident that happens there.  This is called “mystery mongering.” Films and writers have kept this fear alive to make money.

Is the Bermuda Triangle really dangerous? (Current situation)

If we talk about data and statistics, the US Coast Guard and major insurance companies (such as Lloyd’s of London) do not consider the Bermuda Triangle a dangerous area.

Traffic: Thousands of commercial flights and cruise ships pass through this area every year. If it were so dangerous, airlines would stop flying over it.

Data: The WWF (World Wildlife Fund) released a list of the 10 most dangerous shipping routes in the world in 2013. The Bermuda Triangle was not on that list. The most accidents occur in the South China Sea and the Mediterranean Sea.

Rio Opinion

The mystery of the Bermuda Triangle is not due to magic or aliens. It is a combination of natural phenomena. Bad weather, strong ocean currents, human error, and some complex scientific principles combine to cause these accidents.

Today, with GPS, satellite phones, and advanced radar, the mystery of the Bermuda Triangle has almost disappeared. It remains only an exciting chapter in stories and history books.

Science always triumphs over fear. The story of the Bermuda Triangle teaches us how incomplete information can turn a simple natural phenomenon into a “global mystery.”
